The Holy Cypress is No More

12/31/05 | by Joseph A. di Paolantonio [mail] | Categories: Personal

I didn't carry through on my promise to blog about the geek dinner this morning. You may remember the burning Cypress of last winter. Well, it happened again, with a vengenance. And first off, no one was hurt, minimal property damage, and no cars were destroyed - but it was all real close.

The tree toppled over before dawn this morning, pulling down the power lines, with branches bursting in flames in the winter storms we've been having.

I slept through the actual fall and initial flames, until those elderly folk under the stairs, you know, my parents, banged on the door. This was before dawn. When I awoke, all I saw were flames outside my bedroom window. A neighbor, Jennifer, out for an early morning walk, began banging on our back gate, as there were flames throughout our front yard and others.

I didn't have time to grab a camera, so all pictures here are from later in the day.

Even the road burned...

Chip, who lives behind us, and is a fireman (just leaving Montara/Moss Beach FD for El Granada) had also been awakened to bangs and flames, and had hustled out in full gear. The MMBFD was already on the scene. I couldn't get any good shots of them, but here's PG&E arriving to shut things down. Here's a shot of him after the FD left...

And it took the whole block of poles with it.

At the end of Kelmore, at Vermont, the last pole shattered in three pieces, fell between two houses, but took out the electirical stand-off and connections to both houses.

Soon after, the county arrived to take away the Holy Cypress.

PG&E said to plan for three or four days without power. I ran up to my partners to blog this. I'll blog about the geek dinner and The Bay Area is Talking another day.

And for now, all I can say is Happy New Year.
